10 Days in Greece: Athens, Mykonos and Santorini Itinerary

A 10-day Greece itinerary can comfortably combine Athens, Mykonos and Santorini when you limit the trip to three overnight bases and leave room for ferry transfers. One practical plan is two nights in Athens, three in Mykonos and four in Santorini: nine hotel nights across ten calendar days. This gives you ancient landmarks, island villages and time to relax without changing hotels every morning.
This guide follows the core route of our Idyllic Islands Getaway. It is a planning example rather than a promise that every suggested activity is included. Your travel dates, hotel choices, connections and optional experiences are confirmed in your quotation. If you want a different balance of history and beach time, explore our custom Greece tours.

Is 10 days enough for Greece?
Ten days is enough for an introduction to Athens and two islands. It is not enough to see all of Greece at a relaxed pace. Adding Crete, Meteora and several more islands to the same trip turns much of the holiday into packing, transfers and waiting at ports. Choose the experiences that matter most, then give each base enough nights to enjoy them.
Count your nights in Greece separately from your international travel days. A flight from the United States or Canada may leave the day before you arrive. If your flight home requires an overnight in Athens, include that night in the plan rather than squeezing it into a transfer day. The nine-night route below may need to be adjusted around your actual flights.
Your 10-day Greece route at a glance
Days 1–2: Athens — two nights, with arrival time and a full sightseeing day.
Days 3–5: Mykonos — three nights, including the ferry arrival day, leisure time and island highlights.
Days 6–9: Santorini — four nights, including the ferry arrival day, a guided highlights day and two flexible days.
Day 10: Departure from Santorini or a separately planned connection through Athens.
This allocation favours a relaxed island finish. If ancient history is your priority, move a night to Athens or ask about a mainland route. Our Classical Heritage Tour offers a different focus, including Delphi and Meteora rather than this island combination.
Days 1–2: Arrive in Athens and explore the historic city
Day 1: Settle in before sightseeing
Arrive in Athens, transfer to your hotel and keep your first evening flexible. A nearby dinner and a gentle walk can be more enjoyable than a tightly scheduled tour after an overnight flight. Choose a hotel base that suits the restaurants and sights you want to reach, and check the arrival time before booking evening activities.
Day 2: Athens highlights with an unhurried afternoon
Use your full Athens day for guided sightseeing around the Acropolis and historic city. Keep the afternoon for the Acropolis Museum, neighbourhood walks or a café break according to your interests. In the current Idyllic Islands itinerary, the museum afternoon is free time rather than an automatically included museum visit. Ask your travel designer to confirm entry arrangements and the exact guided programme.
For travelers who prefer a gentler pace, discuss walking distances, steps, shade and rest stops before confirming the tour. A private transfer does not make every archaeological site step-free. The best plan is one that reflects your own comfort rather than a checklist of everything that can fit into a day.
Days 3–5: Mykonos beyond the nightlife
Day 3: Travel from Athens to Mykonos
Treat the ferry journey as part of your travel day. Port transfers, check-in, boarding, the crossing and hotel arrival all take time, so avoid committing to a major excursion immediately after arrival. Once settled in Mykonos, you can enjoy the town, windmills or a waterfront dinner if your arrival time allows.
Day 4: Choose a beach day or an optional history excursion
Keep this day open for the kind of island experience you enjoy. You might spend time at a beach, explore the whitewashed lanes or ask about an excursion to Delos. Delos is optional in the current package, so its availability, transport and cost should be checked separately. You do not need to add an excursion simply because the day is free.
Day 5: Island highlights and a slower evening
A guided Mykonos highlights experience can help you explore beyond the busiest streets. Leave the afternoon flexible for dining, shopping or another beach visit. When choosing your hotel, consider whether you prefer easy access to town or a beach setting; neither is automatically the best choice for every couple. Confirm transfers and room access rather than relying only on photographs.
Days 6–9: Santorini scenery with time to enjoy it
Day 6: Ferry to Santorini
Travel from Mykonos to Santorini, transfer to your hotel and leave the evening light. Ferry schedules and available routes vary by travel date. The sequence shown here is a starting point, and connections should be checked before you lock in hotels or international flights.
Day 7: Guided Santorini highlights
Use a guided day to explore villages, volcanic scenery and caldera viewpoints. The current tour describes a Santorini highlights experience with local wine culture and an Oia-area sunset. Confirm the actual stops and what is included in your chosen version. A wine-related stop does not mean every tasting or meal is included.
Day 8: Optional catamaran trip or a free day
A catamaran experience can be arranged as an optional upgrade, subject to availability and conditions. You can also keep the day for your hotel, a short outing or a relaxed lunch. Tell your planner whether boarding a boat, swimming or spending several hours on the water suits you before choosing the activity.
Day 9: Enjoy the island at your own pace
Keep a full day without changing hotels. You may want more time in Fira, a cooking experience or simply a poolside afternoon. Cooking classes, spa visits and additional wine tastings are suggestions to discuss, not standard inclusions. Four Santorini nights work well when you want a slower finish; if you prefer more city time, the overnight balance can be changed.
Day 10: Plan the departure connection carefully
Your last day may involve departure from Santorini or a connection through Athens. Check the complete journey, including airport transfers, baggage arrangements and connection time. Avoid assuming that a ferry arrival and an international flight departure will connect safely on the same day. An extra Athens night may be the more comfortable option, depending on your tickets and schedule.
How to make this route more comfortable
The main advantage of this plan is fewer hotel changes. Ask about private port and airport transfers, luggage handling, ferry seating and hotel room access. In Santorini especially, describe your tolerance for steps and uphill walking before choosing a property. A caldera-view room and an easy-access room are not necessarily the same thing.
Share the details that affect your enjoyment: an early or late start, the length of guided visits, dietary preferences, room configuration and how much free time you want. If a shorter outing suits you better, say so at the planning stage. Our first-time Greece travel tips cover additional practical questions to consider before departure.
Would Naxos or Paros suit you better?
Athens, Mykonos and Santorini are the core package route, but they are not the only possible choice. If your priorities are village visits, beaches or a different island atmosphere, consider replacing one island rather than adding another hotel change. Our Naxos vs Paros guide helps you compare the two.
Naxos, Paros and Milos can be discussed as custom alternatives. They are not included in the standard Idyllic Islands route. Crete is also an optional extension with extra nights and separately arranged transport. Ask for a revised route and quotation before treating any additional island as part of your trip.
What to check in your quotation
The current Idyllic Islands package lists nine nights in selected four-star hotels, daily breakfast, private airport/port/hotel transfers, the Athens–Mykonos–Santorini ferries and specified guided experiences. Hotel upgrades, departure arrangements and optional activities depend on your confirmed quote.
International flights, local hotel taxes, travel insurance, lunches and dinners, and unconfirmed optional activities are not automatically included. Compare the services rather than only the headline price. Ask which tours are private or shared and whether your preferred room type and hotel location are confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
Should I visit three islands in ten days?
It can be possible, but Athens plus two islands is our suggested starting point for a more relaxed first visit. An extra island means another hotel change and transfer day. Add a third only when the confirmed connections and your preferred pace justify it.
Can I combine this with Istanbul and Cappadocia?
Yes, a separate Turkey extension can be discussed, but adding both destinations without extra days changes the pace substantially. Read our Turkey and Greece duration guide before deciding how much time to allocate to two countries.
Is this a fully guided group tour?
The current island package combines arranged hotels, transfers and ferries with selected guided activities and free time. Private or shared activities depend on your preferences and quotation; it is not a promise of a guide accompanying you every hour.
Prefer a Nine-Day Luxury Greece Journey?
Our Luxury Aegean Escape is a separate nine-day, eight-night option through Athens, Mykonos and Santorini, with handpicked luxury or boutique hotels, private transfers and island connections arranged around your dates. It is not the ten-day itinerary described above. Ask us to compare hotel locations, room categories, private or shared activities and free time for your budget. Share your preferred walking pace and any room-access needs; specific arrangements and optional upgrades are confirmed in your quotation.
What season should I choose?
Compare your available dates with the experiences and connections you want. Our best time to visit Turkey and Greece guide explains the seasonal trade-offs. Always check current ferry schedules and activity availability for your actual travel dates.
